Filling
For hairline cracks, nail and screw holes and small dents. Quick, cheap and part of every good paint job.
Skimming
For walls with lots of repairs, bumpy surfaces or damage from removing wallpaper. A thin layer of filler or plaster is spread and sanded to make the surface flat again.
Replastering
Needed when plaster is loose, hollow when tapped, crumbling or badly cracked across large areas. It's a bigger job and takes time to dry before painting.
How to check your wall
- Press and tap: hollow or moving plaster needs replastering
- Shine a torch along the wall at a low angle to see bumps and dips
- Look at crack patterns: long diagonal cracks from corners may point to movement worth checking
We'll tell you honestly which one your wall needs.
Frequently asked questions
How long after filling can I paint?
Small fills can be painted the same day. Larger skimmed areas need longer to dry before the mist coat.
Can you paint straight onto new plaster?
New plaster needs to dry fully and then a diluted mist coat before normal paint.
