Know which way the room faces
- North-facing rooms get cool, even light all day. Warm whites and colours with a yellow or red undertone stop them feeling cold.
- South-facing rooms get warm light. Almost anything works, and cooler greys and blues look fresh.
- East and west change through the day. Test samples in the morning and evening.
Always test on the wall
Paint A4-sized patches on two different walls and look at them over a day or two. We paint free sample patches for our customers before they decide.
Small rooms
Pale colours help, but so does painting walls and woodwork in similar tones, which blurs the edges of the room.
Hard-working areas
Hallways, stairs, kitchens and kids' rooms need scrubbable finishes. Mid-tone colours hide marks better than brilliant white.
Feature walls
A deep colour on the wall behind the bed or sofa adds character without making the room dark.
Frequently asked questions
What's the best white for a north-facing room?
A warm white with a slight yellow or red undertone. Pure brilliant white can look grey in cool light.
Do you help choose colours?
Yes. Victoria helps with colour and finish choices and we paint test patches before you decide.
